A dentist, also called a dental specialist, is a medical doctor who specializes mainly in dentistry, mainly the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and care of dental diseases and problems of the teeth. The dentist's medical team aids him in providing good oral healthcare services. The most common procedures performed by dentists include dental implant placement, dental bridges, dental crowns, dental veneers, tooth decay diagnosis and removal, tooth whitening, cosmetic dentistry etc. A dentist may specialize in any of these fields as per his qualification. Dentists can undertake additional specialization courses if they wish to do so.

Most of the dental specialists earn their Doctorate degrees at colleges that offer specialized courses on the subject. At least two years of specialized study from a recognized dental specialty institute is needed to become a dentist. Most dentists who opt for a Doctorate degree choose one from a list of about twelve dental specializations approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Almost all dentists need to attain an externship in a dental clinic for several months before they can apply for a Doctorate degree. This experience helps them to build up hands-on experience and gives them hands-on practice with dental patients.

The dentist is also expected to perform some major functions such as the cleaning and the filling of the cavities in the mouth, prevent the formation of cavities, remove plaque and food particles from between teeth, take care of damaged teeth, polish and whiten teeth, fillings and root canal treatments. Some of these duties are performed by the dental hygienist or the dental assistant. Dental care generally includes a regular daily routine of brushing the teeth and using mouthwash. Brushing removes all the particles of food and plaque from between the teeth and gums. Flossing keeps the teeth properly cleaned and also removes small particles of food from between the teeth.
There are different types of prosthodontics available and some of these are dentures, bridges, retainers, implants, mandibular advancement devices, osseointegrout and veneers. Dr. Randy Johnson's Center for Contemporary Dentistry perform a variety of dental procedures like bonding, crowns, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening and dental implants. Any of these procedures can be done without the help of anesthetic.

All these procedures help the dentist in making the patient feel comfortable and provide them with the best possible care. A dentist performs various types of treatments depending upon the condition and problem of each patient. If a patient has a sensitive tooth or any fracture then he needs to be taken through a rigorous course of treatment. In case of general dentists all patients have to go through a thorough course of treatment before they are discharged from the clinic.

The patient also has the option of going through dental admission in the dental surgery for immediate care. This means that the patient is taken straight to the dentist surgery for an immediate X-ray and consultation. Dental admission provides the patient immediate pain relief as well as an appropriate diagnostic care. When a patient is referred to an orthodontist, the patient again goes through an intensive course of treatment and dental admission.
